Frequently asked questions
How many videos can play at once?
From a single clip up to a 144-tile grid. Pick a grid size from the control bar or press ⌘1 through ⌘9. To keep big walls responsive, dense grids of 25+ tiles show only files under 500 MB by default — you can lift that limit in Settings > Performance.
Which video formats are supported?
VideoBuffet plays whatever macOS itself supports — most .mp4, .mov, and .m4v files (H.264 or HEVC). Some .mkv, .avi, or .webm files won't open if your Mac lacks that codec; converting those to .mp4 (H.264) fixes it.
.ogg/.ogv and professional .mxf files are converted automatically on import to a playable proxy. Note: this automatic OGG/MXF conversion is available in the direct-download edition only.
VideoBuffet is video-only — photo files are ignored.
How do I play vertical phone videos without black bars?
Switch the wall to Profile View: click the 2:3 cell-shape button in the control bar (or right-click > Cell Shape). Vertical clips fill vertical cells natively; toggle back to 16:9 widescreen anytime. It's VideoBuffet's signature feature.
What is Auto Framing?
An on-device neural network finds the actual video region inside each clip — trimming away chat panels, comments, and menus around screen recordings — and the Framing display mode crops each tile to it. Build the index once (File > Build Auto-Framing Index, about 1–2 seconds per clip, resumable) and Framing becomes instant wall-wide. It runs entirely on your Mac and the index stores crop geometry only — no filenames, nothing uploaded.
Why does everything start muted?
By design, for privacy and performance: every launch starts muted, and very dense walls force-mute (many simultaneous soundtracks is the heaviest load). Press U or click the speaker button to unmute. You can change the startup behavior in Settings.
Can I speed playback up or slow it down?
Yes. Playback > All Videos' Speed sets the whole wall from 0.25× to 2×; right-click a tile > This Video's Speed overrides one clip; and the full-size player goes to 4× with [ and ]. "Preserve pitch" (on by default) keeps voices natural at any speed — turn it off for the classic tape-speed sound.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
For nearly everything. ⌘⇧K opens the Keyboard Shortcuts window with the full list. A few favorites: S shuffles the wall, L sets an A-B loop in the full-size player, . and , step frame by frame, and ~ is the boss key — one press mutes, pauses, and hides the whole app.
Where are my crops, trims, and speeds saved? Can I back them up?
All your Saved Reframes live in one local file, keyed to each video's content — so they survive renames and moves, and your original video files are never modified. File > Export Reframes… writes a .vbreframes backup you can keep anywhere or move to another Mac; Import Reframes… restores or merges it.
What are the system requirements?
macOS 12 (Monterey) or later. VideoBuffet is built native for Apple silicon and tuned for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro — hardware-decoded playback per tile and an on-device AI model small enough to run on battery.
Does VideoBuffet send anything over the internet?
No. Playback, AI framing, the memory system, and the help chat all run entirely on your Mac, fully offline. The only network-adjacent features are Help > Send Feedback, which opens a draft in your own mail app (nothing is sent unless you press Send), and the Help-menu links that open this website in your browser.
